Nanometer-Scale Authigenic Quartz Associated with Algal Bituminite and Intraorganic Nanoporosity in the Devonian Marcellus Shale: Observations and Hypotheses

چکیده

The petroleum industry’s use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies has changed organic-rich mudstones, like the Devonian Marcellus Formation, from conventional hydrocarbon sources and seals to unconventional ‘shale gas’ reservoirs. Organic-richness and formation brittleness are two principal components of reservoir quality assessment, as the former is indicative of the amount of hydrocarbons present [1] [2], and the latter is indicative of hydrocarbon accessibililty via hydraulic fracturing [1]. Interestingly, organic matter is associated with authigenic quartz [3] [FIG. 1], a primary brittle component within mudstone; therefore the nature of the organic-quartz association is critical to better understanding shale gas reservoirs.

Isotope approach to assess hydrologic connections during Marcellus Shale drilling.

Water and gas samples were collected from (1) nine shallow groundwater aquifers overlying Marcellus Shale in north-central West Virginia before active shale gas drilling, (2) wells producing gas from Upper Devonian sands and Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale in southwestern Pennsylvania, (3) coal-mine water discharges in southwestern Pennsylvania, and (4) streams in southwestern Pennsylvania and ...

Early Diagenetic Silica Deposition in Algal Cysts and Spores: a Source of Sand in Black Shales

Devonian black shales that were deposited on the North American craton contain abundant Tasmanites cysts. Although these are typically flattened because of compaction, a small proportion of cysts is filled with diagenetic silica. The latter are spherical to ellipsoidal (0.1-0.5mm), and filled with chalcedony, microand megaquartz, and with single quartz crystals. Chalcedonic cyst fillings are pr...

Geochemical and strontium isotope characterization of produced waters from Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction.

Extraction of natural gas by hydraulic fracturing of the Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale, a major gas-bearing unit in the Appalachian Basin, results in significant quantities of produced water containing high total dissolved solids (TDS). We carried out a strontium (Sr) isotope investigation to determine the utility of Sr isotopes in identifying and quantifying the interaction of Marcellus Form...

Evaluation of Methane Sources in Groundwater in Northeastern Pennsylvania

Testing of 1701 water wells in northeastern Pennsylvania shows that methane is ubiquitous in groundwater, with higher concentrations observed in valleys vs. upland areas and in association with calcium-sodium-bicarbonate, sodium-bicarbonate, and sodium-chloride rich waters--indicating that, on a regional scale, methane concentrations are best correlated to topographic and hydrogeologic features...

Natural Gas Plays in the Marcellus Shale: Challenges and Potential Opportunities

Figure 1 features locations of shale basins across the U.S. that bear natural gas. There are many reasons to pursue the development of natural gas. First, the supply of natural gas in the U.S. is very reliable, and the delivery system is less subject to interruption compared to imported fossil fuel. Second, the high energy content of natural gas (about 30 kJ/m3 [1000 Btu/ft3]) and a well-develo...
